X-Rite released its i1Publish range of colour management products as an upgrade to all of its previous software solutions, such as MonacoProfiler and ProfileMaker. The new system is a break with the past, though, and after having tested the software I cannot but conclude it’s not always a successful break at that.
Apparent Corporation released the newest version of its flagship barcode creator, Barcode Producer 6. With the new version, Barcode Producer proves it’s the only barcode creation tool that is a perfect fit for graphic and layout designers.
The Zebra GX430t is a double-walled dual-media desktop label printer, a good deal bigger than a direct thermal-only Dymo Twin Turbo. It’s also a good deal more robust and capable than any Dymo currently on the market. Zebra’s GX430t offers 300dpi at 102mm/sec printing. It can be loaded with 104mm wide labels, tags and fan-folded media. Administrators can program the printer using both EPL and ZPL II programming languages. In addition to these, there is provision for XML-enabled printing and ZBI, the Zebra Basic Interpreter.
Zebra label printer software runs on the Windows platform. This way Zebra can ensure its printers integrate with SAP and other high-end enterprise systems, but it does rule out Mac OS X drivers. An experimental CUPS driver is available to Leopard users, but this driver is flaky. The British Peninsula Group has the answer: a driver that integrates with the Mac OS X printing system and which delivers all the controls a Zebra GX430t user needs.
The Zebra GX430t handles two different types of media: thermal transfer and direct thermal. We tested the GX430t with thermal Z-Select 2000T and Z-Ultimate 3000T thermal transfer labels using 2300 wax and 5095 resin ribbons respectively. The direct thermal media was the Z-Select 2000D. All three media have a core that fits the GX430t perfectly. Each roll of these labels has over 1,000 labels.
With the Zebra GX430t label printer comes ZebraDesigner, a label design application that runs on Windows XP and Windows 7. Currently, Zebra doesn’t support Mac OS X. The ZebraDesigner software is quite complete, with the exception of support for delimited field files and databases — if you need this functionality, you’ll have to buy ZebraDesigner Pro, a label design software that can also manage RFID tag label printing.
